It commemorates the employees of the Bombay Port Trust (now Mumbai Port Trust) who fell during World War I (1914-1918) and Port Trusts contribution to the war effort. This memorial, with brass plaques on three sides, is a reminder of the extent to which the city, especially her docks, was part of the Allied war efforts during World War 1. The world War Memorial Crossroad was renamed Mumbai Custom Jamadar Bapu Laxman Chowk after Jamadar Bapu Laxman Lamkhede, who was a member of the Dock Intelligence Unit. It stands on the reclaimed foreshore filled during the excavations for the docks. This building was also designed by Consulting Architect to the Government of Bombay, George Wittet. It is worth noting that Wittet laid out the whole of the Ballard Estate on this reclaimed land. This made the area a particularly impressive part of town, a testimony to its status as the economic hub of India. The style of Architecture drew elements from native Indo-Islamic and Indian architecture and combined it with the Gothic revival and Neo-Classical styles. The port of Mumbai developed through the centuries into the modern spectacle it is today. After the transfer of the Port and Island to the East India Company by Royal Charter in 1668, development of the Port started taking shape. Various measures such as construction of a Custom house, a warehouse, dry docks etc. were taken up by the Company to encourage trade. In 1873, the present statutory autonomous Port Trust was set up for administering the affairs of the Bombay Port. The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 revolutionized the maritime trade of Bombay. It shifted the whole scenario of import and export trade from the East coast to the West and Bombay port became the principal Gateway of India. The administrative building shown here, was constructed to hold all the offices of the various docks that came up over the next few decades. The fountain was designed by the well-known 19th century architect, Frederick William Stevens, and the sculptor was John Griffiths, the head of Sir JJ School of Art (then known as Bombay School of Art). In Mumbai, like in other Indian cities, fountains were erected in memory of important people or to commemorate an event. Benefactors of the city often donated drinking water fountains which were either free standing structures or were combined with drinking water troughs for horses or cattle. However, the Ruttonsee Mulji Memorial fountain stands out because of the architectural style that it is built in. Indo-Saracenic was a style created by the British to merge the British and Indian sensibilities. Also, in this case, the sponsor was an Indian businessman, and the fountain was in the native quarters of the Fort area. From here, we turn back and take a right turn onto Agiyari Lane. Our next stop is Maneckji Seth Agiyari. Before we get there, if anyone needs to grab a quick bite to satisfy their appetite, can do so at the famous New Kayani Restaurant and Stores. From there, we move on to the Agiyari","POI_Type":"Poi","POI_Number":5,"POI_Status":"Published","POI_Content_Type":"Audio","POI_Content_URL":"https://amble.theheritageproject.in/Walks/Content/map3-poi6-poicontent.mp3","POI_Trigger_Area":1,"Latitude":18.935364,"Longitude":72.837125},{"POI_Thumbnail_URL":["https://amble.theheritageproject.in/Walks/Thumbnails/map3-poi7-poithumbnail.jpeg"],"_id":"60cb01e4fa7f821895780dc9","POI_ID":"poi6","POI_Name":"Maneckji Sett Agiyari","POI_Description":"The Maneckji Sett Agiyari is the second oldest Parsi Fire Temple in Mumbai, after the Seth Banaji Limji Agiyari. It was established in 1733, by Seth Maneckji Nowroji Sett, the son of a wealthy Parsi trader. The temple is known for its striking architecture and its external façade featuring lamassu (protective deities depicted as hybrid figures including a human head, a body of an ox or a lion, and wings of a bird). The architecture of the building is a mix of Persian and Greek revival styles. The city is home to about 50 fire temples, and the oldest of these are almost all located in Fort, which is not surprising considering that the area was home to the bulk of the citys Parsi population. After looking at the financial and economic district of the city, it is interesting to take a look at how money evolved through the ages. The RBI Monetary Museum provides us with a wide-ranging collection from ancient punch marked coins to modern Bank notes from the British Raj. It is a museum that covers the evolution of money in India, from the earliest Barter system and the use of cowrie shells to the use of coins and paper money. It was established under the educational programme by RBI in 2004 and was inaugurated by A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. It was the first museum in the country devoted to economic history and numismatics. The collection contains examples from the Indus Valley Civilization to the British Raj and the Post-Independence era With this, our Heritage walk comes to an end","POI_Type":"Poi","POI_Number":7,"POI_Status":"Published","POI_Content_Type":"Audio","POI_Content_URL":"https://amble.theheritageproject.in/Walks/Content/map3-poi8-poicontent.mp3","POI_Trigger_Area":1,"Latitude":18.934088,"Longitude":72.835825}],"__v":1,"ArPoi":"0","ArScene_AB_Url":"","AssetBundle_Name":"periscopeasset2306","TotalWalkDistance":"1","PeriscopeARScene_Name":"PeriscopeARScene 1","PeriscopeARScene_URL":"","Map_Ratting":"0","PeriscopeARScene_IOS_URL":"","ArScene_AB_IOS_Url":"","Map_Version":39,"Map_Zip_Url":"https://amble.theheritageproject.in/Database/MapPoiContent/map3.zip","Total_Trivia":"3","AssetBundle_IOS_Name":"","Sort_Number":2}
